So, I saw this PRADA Medium Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag at the specialty store the other day, and I just thought, “I gotta have that, but there’s no way I’m paying that price.” So, I decided I’d try to make one myself. How hard could it be, right?

First, I went online and looked up a bunch of pictures of the bag. I mean, a LOT of pictures. Front, back, sides, inside, every angle I could find. I wanted to get a good feel for the dimensions and all the little details.

Next, I started sketching. I’m no artist, but I did my best to draw out the different panels of the bag and figure out the measurements. It was a lot of trial and error, let me tell you. I used a ruler, a protractor, and even some cardboard to make templates.

Then came the fun part – choosing the materials. I went to a few different fabric stores and leather shops, feeling up all kinds of stuff. Finally, I found this gorgeous Saffiano leather that looked and felt pretty darn close to the real deal. I also picked up some sturdy fabric for the lining and some gold-colored hardware to match the original.

Cutting the leather was nerve-wracking! I measured, and measured again, and then made my cuts. I used a rotary cutter and a metal ruler to get those lines as straight as possible. I also cut out the lining pieces, making sure to leave some extra room for seams.

Now, the sewing. Oh boy, the sewing. I dusted off my old sewing machine and got to work. Stitching leather is tough, you need a special needle and a lot of patience. I started with the smaller pieces, like the handles and the zipper pulls, just to get the hang of it. Then, I slowly started assembling the main body of the bag, panel by panel.

  • Sewing the lining to the leather was quite tricky. I did most of it by hand to ensure it would look neat.
  • Attaching the hardware was another challenge. I used a hammer and some special tools I had to buy just for this project. But hey, it was all part of the process.

After many hours, a few broken needles, and a lot of cursing, I finally finished it. It wasn’t perfect, and there are a few wonky seams if you look close enough, but you know what? I was pretty proud of myself.

The Result

I carried my handmade “Prada” bag to the grocery store, and you wouldn’t believe the looks I got. Okay, maybe they were just looking at my mismatched socks, but in my head, they were admiring my handiwork. It felt good to have something unique that I had made with my own two hands. Plus, I saved a ton of money, which I promptly spent on more fabric because, let’s be honest, I’m hooked now. I’m already planning my next project – a “Gucci” maybe? Stay tuned!
